Had that happen to me once. I took the bus home and got off at my stop, then decided I wanted to go get something to eat first at a place farther down the route. Got on the next bus, and it wouldn’t take my card. I told the driver I’d just gotten off the last bus and he let me board.
If you’re sharing an unlimited ride MetroCard with another person or you’re using it on the same bus route, then yes, you will have to be 20 minutes (not 15 minutes). This is the reason why you need to purchase individual cards.

If it is a regular metrocard, you can use it up to 4 times in a row without having to wait.
If you are using an unlimited metrocard, you have to wait 18 minutes until you can use it again.
