We've produced a few stars in San Francisco (Anette Benning, Nicholas Cage, Sean Penn, James Franco, Robin Williams, Alicia Silverstone, Sharon Stone) and two famous directors (George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola). But there are far more opportunities to get noticed in Los Angeles and New York. Due to the presence of Silicon Valley, however, San Francisco companies handle much of the post-production work for Hollywood. We have some of the best animators and special effects specialists in the business. The San Francisco region is home to Pixar, Lucasfilm (Industrial Light and Magic), Dolby, Dreamworks Animation, and Wild Brain. If you're more interested in the technical side of filmmaking, then San Francisco is actually a fine place to learn the trade. But not if you want screen time. Not if you want to become an actor. You should go to Los Angeles or New York for that.

As SF dude says there is a lot of post production and technical work. Sadly Hollywood doesn't film much in SF anymore due to costs. And films that do shoot in SF seem to be adverse to casting SF actors in any feature or supporting roles, that work often goes to LA actors who are transported to SF for filming.
