Apart from Athens and Vergina there is always Delphi and Olympia.
Two of the most important places during antiquity for Greeks and mankind alike.

Apart from the places already mentioned, I would settle in Nafplio as a basecamp for a while and explore the region. Apart from the city itself (which used to be the first capital of the young Greek state and has one of the most impressive Venetian fortifications, Palamidi) you'll find within an hour drive the ancient cities of Argos (the oldest city of Europe, seat of the royal house of Atreides), Tyrins (the cyclopean walls, 17m thick at some spots), Mycenae (with its Gate of Lions and famous tombs), the ancient theatre of Epidavros (4th centrury BC, famous for its perfection and incredible acoustics). You'll be at the epicenter of Greek mythology and feel like a real Indiana Jones.

Unorthodox tip: read Henri Miller's "The Colossus of Maroussi" in preparation for (or during) your trip.
